Part 1: Introducing 2021 Market Research Findings
In 2021, Fernhill Shopworks engaged in market research on behalf of NEEA's Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLC) initiative. This video (part 1 of 4) introduces the mini series and outlines the topics which will be covered: A) what's driving control specification?, B) common areas of confusion, and C) wireless trends.
Part 2: What’s Driving Lighting Controls Specification?
Part 2 shares key findings from the surveys and interviews conducted with experienced lighting professionals. Dubbed, Operation Secret Journal, this project recorded key insights on more than 60 unique projects.
Part 3: Common Areas of Confusion
Part 3 of this series dives into common areas of confusion that routinely surfaced during interviews with experienced market actors. How many names can you think of for a load controller? Exactly how integrated are we talking? Do you mean networked, or networked-ish? Small wonder the controls industry seems to lag behind where it should be.
Part 4: Key Trends in Wireless
The final video of this series highlights key trends in wireless lighting, with a focus on mesh networks, what makes them special, and how their proliferation has radically shifted the lighting controls landscape.
Gen 2 Demo Boards | Now Available by Request
A New Type of Public Resource
The NLC demo boards are fully functioning, plug n’ play, hands-on learning aides designed to demonstrate the value proposition of networked controls in a way that webinars and product literature can’t match.
Intended for use at training events, workshops, and as a sales aide, the NLC demo boards are a public resource intended to support utility energy efficiency programs and lighting program partners.
NEW FEATURES:
The second generation NLC demo boards features the same plug n’ play ease of use, but has added: plug load controls, wireless wall stations, and new graphics which promote flexibility and system ease of use.

Areas of common confusion
Important wireless trends
A PDF of the presentation is available by clicking the image tot he right.
NEW RESOURCE: Wireless Technology in Lighting
A new learning guide, available for public consumption
In 2021, Fernhill Shopworks was hired to analyze trends in wireless networked lighting systems. The objective was to identify not only where the market is headed, but also to flush out key areas of confusion which stymie market growth and confound installers and customers alike.
Described as remarkably potent and digestible, this learning guide was informed through dozens of interviews with leading market experts and covers:
Key concepts in modern wireless lighting systems
Identifies major trends impacting designers, installers, and operators
Provides context and considerations for decision makers.
The full learning guide is intended to supplement existing educational resources available to the lighting industry.
A condensed 1-page version titled “Questions to ask before going wireless in lighting” is also available to share with customers.
A one man delegation to South Korea
Visiting this temple, (first built circa 800) was the highlight of my visit.
Speaking to members of the Korean LED Association
When you are on official government biz - you surrender your regular passport and they give you a cool new one.
Korean cuisine is out of this world. Every three months or so… I’ve gotta get my kimchi fix. One of my favorite food carts is this joint called Kim Jong Grillin, we should go there next time you are in Portland.
Putting the EE in Halloween
Scary Good!
I’ll admit it. I’m not as into Halloween as a lot of people… which is a shame… because I carve a really mean pumpkin. These are so accurate you can probably guess the vintage LED.
